Outback at Isa

Mount Isa North West Queensland
Outback at Isa is home to three unique outback experiences your school group will be talking about for years to come, the Hard Times Mine Tour, Riversleigh Fossil Centre and Isa Experience.
Journey below ground for an attraction unlike any other on the Hard Times Mine Tour. The Hard Times Mine Tour will give you a fascinating insight into Australia’s deepest underground mine network where you will be taken through Mount Isa’s mining history. You’ll wear orange overalls and standard issue miners’ boots for the tour as well as a hard hat and cap lamp so you can see everything just as the miners see it. This is a 2.5 hour fully guided tour underground with an experienced mine guide.
The Riversleigh Fossil Centre displays many specimens from the World Heritage area. Students can visit the working laboratory and view some of our many microscopic specimens on our guided tours. Tours can be tailored to suit a variety of school curriculum subjects including paleontology, geology, science-based subjects, evolution, environment and animal science as well as conservation based subjects….and much more! These tours, with our experienced staff, give students a great insight into our ancient animal past with emphasis on promoting the preservation of our current ecosystems.  Tour duration is approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours. We can also cater for the varying requirements of our school groups and alter tour timing upon request.
Discover how Mount Isa came to be the multicultural, prosperous city of today by visiting the Isa Experience, a self-guided exhibit. Learn about the Kalkadoons, John Campbell Miles who discovered ore in 1923, watch a short film in the water tank theatrette and new in 2018, the Rodeo Hall of Fame. Entry includes the Outback Park which showcases the native plants and attracts local birds and lizards. At the back of the Outback Park you can find the Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group’s native fish display.
Catering is available from the Outback at Isa Café. Pre-order your morning or afternoon-tea or lunch. Sit and relax in the café, Outback Park or take-away to Lake Moondarra or the Family Fun Park.
While in Mount Isa be sure to head up to the City Lookout for the perfect group shot at the world traveler signpost. Take a tour through Australia’s largest class room, the Mount Isa School of the Air or learn about our World War II history at the Underground Hospital and Tent House.
At the end of the day take a drive to Lake Moondarra. A perfect spot for a BBQ, bush walks or some group activities.
