The Rail Heritage Centre, Thirlmere is the home ofTrainworks  and is Australia’s oldest and largest railway museum.

On display are 125 railway exhibits representing the development of the NSW railways from the late 1800s to the present day

Displays at the centre include:

  • Steam locomotives dating from 1865 to 1957
  • The most powerful steam locomotive ever used in Australia
  • Over 40 locomotives – steam, diesel and electric
  • 80 carriages, plus goods wagons and special carriages including a prison van, horse box, sleeping cars and mail van
  • small exhibits museum and signalling display, and an authentic fettler’s shed

Opened in November 2009 is the new operations maintenance facility providing visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at the conservation and maintenance work performed at the Centre. The historic railway precinct includes a heritage listed 1880s railway station and stationmasters house.

TRAINWORKS is ideal for school groups and educational excursions and has particular relevance to science & technology, social history and transport. Reference material is provided to support school curricula and guided tours include museum, historic precinct and maintenance workshop.

The shop stocks a wide range of books, publications and DVDs on railway heritage as well as train-related souvenirs and keepsakes.

Complimentary morning or afternoon tea is provided (Cordial and biscuits for the young ones)

Group discounts apply with free entry for carers, teachers and tour guides.

Trains operate on the Thirlmere Heritage Railway on Sundays and public holidays (generally March to November inclusive, and usually also in January). Trains are steam-hauled on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, except in fire danger periods. Charters are available on weekdays with prior booking.
