NSW RAIL MUSEUM

NSW  RAIL MUSEUM  is Australia’s biggest and newest rail experience. Home to Australia’s largest collection of working and static rolling stock and a vast display of objects, artefacts and memorabilia, Trainworks tells the story of New South Wales’ rail history.

 
  NSW Rail Museum  is  in Thirlmer, only an hour south west of Sydney and in easy reach of Canberra, Wollongong and the South Coast.Since 1975 the Thirlmere site has been home to a significant collection of rail heritage items and with the upgrade of facilities and recent opening of the new exhibition buildingis now a major regional heritage attraction.
 
The school visits program supports the following units of the Science & Technology and HSIE Curricula:

Science & Technology - Stage 1: Getting about; Stage 2: Out and about; Stage 3: On the move.
HSIE - Stage 1: Transport; Stage 4/5 History: compulsory site study
 
We also welcome Vacation Care group bookings during the school holidays for an exciting and educational day out.

Children will be able to climb into the cab of an old steam locomotive, enjoy the sound and light show that tells the story of loco 1021, explore inside some of our special-purpose carriages such as the mail van, sleeping and dining cars, feel what it was like for prisoners inside the prison van with our interactive display, hear the hustle and bustle, puff and chug of a steam-era train station, learn about some of the most interesting jobs on the railways, marvel at elegant engineering and craftsmanship, meet some of our heroes and legends in the Great Train Hall, operate the Steam Machine to learn how steam power works, view behind-the-scenes maintenance and conservation of the heritage fleet in the roundhouse and watch the live action of the working turntable
 

Open Weekdays 10am – 4pm and Weekends 9am – 5pm
