Let us introduce you to the thrill of the gold rush where students can learn about the importance of gold mining in the North Queensland region ever since it began in the 1800s.

DRIVING the wide streets of Charters Towers is like viewing a living montage of Australian heritage. Once the second-largest city in Queensland, Charters Towers is as rich in history, as it was in gold. There is a whole different world here where you can see the outback, feel the history and live Australia’s story.

The city has great facilities, shady commemorative parks and gardens, activities, meals and accommodation to make any school excursion an unforgettable learning experience. Farm stays are also a great outback learning adventure.

If your class is studying gold, or simply looking for somewhere to host a school camp, contact us at the Visitor Information Centre, your one stop shop for assistance with planning your school excursion. We’d be delighted to provide you with:
-    Customised itineraries to suit your class’s unique requirements.
-    Reservation service for all tour bookings and single invoice for payment.
-    Special prices for school groups.
-    Information and contacts for accommodation and catering options suitable for school groups of all sizes.

The perfect starting point for your tour of Charters Towers is our Orientation Film and Stock Exchange Arcade. An education activity at only $1 per student.
Some of the other exciting and educational activities available to students include:
The Miner’s Cottage – A step back in time where the students can pan for real gold (they’ll take home whatever they find in their pan!) and visit the blacksmith’s shop.
Texas Longhorn Wagon – Roam amongst the largest herd of Texas Longhorn cattle in Australia aboard a covered wagon pulled by gentle giant Percheron horses. A real home cooked "smoko", served from an authentic chuck wagon is included.
Venus Gold Battery Tours - of the largest surviving battery relic in Australia, just one of 11 that once operated on the Charters Towers gold fields.
Ghosts After Dark film presentation in the amphitheatre on Towers Hill. Hear about some local tales and take away an understanding of how life was during the gold rush.
Adventure Based Learning – teaching teamwork, developing leadership, self-esteem, cooperation and extending personal boundaries.
Plus much more... We can help tailor an itinerary to suit your curriculum requirements across most subjects.
