Long before the dinosaurs the mighty rivers of the Central West teemed with bizarre ancient fishes – fishes with armoured shells, fish with lungs, and huge predators with jaws like crocodiles. Thousands of their fossils were found at Canowindra and give us a unique glimpse into life during the Devonian Period – the “Age Of Fishes”.

A chance discovery in 1956 revealed an extensive fossil bed dating from the Devonian Period. This 360 million year old formation contained the fossilised remains of over 3500 freshwater fish. Many were new to science. This fossil collection is now on public display in the township of Canowindra, only a short distance from the discovery location. The Museum displays many of these beautiful fossils together with live aquarium displays and wonderful re-creations of life in the Devonian.

Enjoy the sculpture garden designed as part of an arts program with local high school students, wander the permanent exhibitions and the timeline and browse the gift shop. The Age Of Fishes Museum has a well developed education program including worksheets for Kindergarten to Year 12 and offers organised fossil digs and other educational activities.

One of the geologists or scientists will usually work with individual classes. Schools are welcome to bring their own morning/afternoon tea or lunch and use the picnic area at the rear of the Museum.

Located on the corner of Gaskill and Ferguson Streets, Canowindra, NSW. Please book in advance. The Museum is opening from 10.00am – 4.00pm, 7 days. Admission applies.
